An estimated 40 to 60 percent of men are affected by gynecomastia, the medical term for enlarged breasts. Heredity, hormones, medication, or drug use are all potential causes for this condition which can negatively impact a male’s self- image and cause him to avoid various physical activities due to self-consciousness. For this reason, Dr. Newall finds this surgery particularly rewarding to perform because of the positive difference in self-confidence he so often sees it make in male patients. Several techniques are utilized in a gynectomastia procedure depending on the underlying causes of the condition. Liposuction may be all that is required to reduce excess fatty tissue. If excess glandular material is also present, Dr. Newall may use the “pull through” technique to make a small incision through which he can remove the tissue. This will leave a small scar that is hidden in the areola line. If excess skin is present, he will remove this, as well. His consultation with you will allow him to determine the best treatment plan to fit your needs. This procedure can be performed in 1-2 hours under local anesthesia, and most patients are able to return to work in 3-4 days. Heavy exercise should be avoided for 3-4 weeks.
