Otoplasty surgery is performed to alter the shape and size of the ears, or, most commonly, to correct protruding ears by positioning them closer to the head. Though children as young as six may undergo this procedure, Dr. Newall prefers for his otoplasty patients to be at least 14 years of age. During the surgery, he makes an incision behind the ear through which he can resculpt the cartilage. Sutures are then put in place to help the ear hold its shape. This procedure can be performed in 1-3 hours using local anesthesia. Most adults can return to work in 5 days, while children typically recover in about 7 days.
