Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is used to correct several conditions of the nose, including reducing or increasing the size of your nose, changing the shape of the tip or the bridge of your nose or correcting a birth defect or injury. Septoplasty is used to correct breathing or snoring problems.

Dr. Newall will determine if you are a candidate for rhinoplasty, but typically will perform the procedure on females who are at least fifteen years old or males who are at least 17 years old.

The following procedures can be performed as outpatient surgery under general anesthesia and normally do not take more than two to three hours. The day after surgery, patients should plan to stay in bed with their head elevated and plan to return to work in seven to ten days. You may resume exercise and other activities two to four weeks after surgery.

Drooping Nasal Tip/Nasal Hump/Enlarged Nostrils

Having a drooping nasal tip or a crooked nose corrected or a large nasal hump removed will not only improve the look and shape of your nose, but also will make enlarged nostrils smaller. Dr. Newall will determine if you are a candidate for this surgery and discuss with you any associated risks that are involved. He may also suggest computer imaging so you can be realistic about you expectations from the surgery.

Depending on the individual, incisions during surgery will either be made inside the nose or across the tissue that separates the nostrils. Dr. Newall will discuss the procedure with you in detail during your office visit. After surgery, you will wear a splint to help your nose maintain its new shape and nasal packs may also be placed in your nostrils to stabilize the wall that divides the air passages.

Septoplasty

Nasal surgery, or septoplasty, is needed when the septum, the wall that divides the nasal cavity, becomes crooked and causes an obstruction in the nasal passages. Individuals who have problems with snoring also are possible candidates for septoplasty.

During septoplasty, internal incisions are made, but if you also are having rhinoplasty at the same time, an external incision may be required. The chances of bruising are minimal, although again, if you have both septoplasty and rhinoplasty, bruising may result. Dr. Newall will discuss all your concerns with you during your office visit.

Check with your insurance provider to determine if this surgery is covered by your plan, as nasal deformities may indicate a more serious medical condition.
