Dr. German Newall Answers the Age-Old Question: Silicone or Saline

One of the most popular surgeries Dr. Newall performs at his office in Houston is breast augmentation surgery with implants.  It has a near perfect satisfaction rate because the results are great and downtime is minimal, with patients returning to normal activities in about a week.

Many patients come to our office for breast implants, but are not sure how to choose between saline and silicone.  Each implant type has its advantages, so Dr. Newall guides each patient to the breast implants that are appropriate for her.

Silicone implants are softer to the touch and feel more like natural breasts.  However, they are a bit more expensive and must be replaced after 15-20 years.  Additionally, it is recommended that patients with silicone implants get an MRI every three years to ensure there are no complications or ruptures. Despite this extra maintenance, many patients opt for silicone because of the natural look and feel.

“Silicone is great for patients that have very little breast tissue,” says Genesis Sanchez, a medical assistant for Dr. Newall.  “They need an implant that looks and feels like a real breast, because it represents almost all of their volume.”

Saline implants are less expensive than their silicone counterpart, and have fewer complications. They also have a lower rate of revision surgery and require less maintenance, as they should last the life of the patient.  Because these implants are filled by the surgeon, saline implants are a great option for women with asymmetrical breasts.

“90 percent of females have asymmetry in regard to breast size,” says Dr. German Newall.  “Saline can fix this because I have the ability to fill one implant slightly more or less than the other.”

Dr. Newall is also able to make a smaller incision when using saline implants because they are filled after the implant is inserted under the muscle.  A shorter incision means a shorter scar, and for this reason, many patients choose saline implants for breast augmentation in Houston.

The only downside to saline implants is the chance of rippling or wrinkling, which appears as small waves on the lower outside of the breasts.  This can happen to any patient with saline or silicone, but saline implants have a higher rate of wrinkling.

“The majority of my patients choose saline,” says Dr. Newall. “It’s a safer choice in the long term and has fewer complications overall. I highly recommend saline to my patients.”

Overall, the choice of saline or silicone is up to the individual patient. Dr. Newall and his patient coordinator, Patricia Escobar will do everything they can to guide you to the implant that is more appropriate for you.
