Dr. Newall Develops a Safer, More Efficient Method for Fat Transfer

One of the most popular procedures Dr. Newall performs is fat grafting.  Unlike liposuction, fat grafting isn’t just about having less fat.  It is also about taking fat from unwanted places like the tummy and moving it to places you want to accentuate, like the hips and buttocks.

Fat redistribution has been around for a long time, but in the last few years Dr. Newall has perfected a method to make the procedure safer and more efficient with better maintained results.

There are two issues to consider when choosing a method for fat distribution. These are the volume of fat being transferred and the survival of the fat cells.  Historically, surgeons would remove fat from unwanted areas through liposuction and insert it into other areas with a syringe and needle. This process was tedious and time consuming, like trying to fill a water balloon with an eyedropper.  Patients wanting to distribute a large volume of fat to an area like the buttocks would require two to three additional hours in surgery.  Despite longer surgeries, doctors still were not able to transfer enough fat to make a visible difference in the size of the buttocks. The process of forcing the fat cells through a syringe and tiny needle killed many of the cells.  Only 50% of the fat cells transferred would survive more than 6 months.

Dr. Newall and his colleague, Dr. Henry Mentz, were determined to find a solution that would provide better long-term results.

“We essentially took the mechanism used for suctioning fat out and reversed it,” Dr. Newall said. “The fat is gently, but quickly moved through a small tube with a series of spinning propellers, rather than being forced from one end like a tube of toothpaste.”

The end result: power-assisted fat grafting. This continuous flow of fat cells allows Dr. Newall to transfer twice as much fat in a matter of minutes as opposed to two hours. As an extra safety precaution, he adds antibiotics to the fat to eliminate the risk of infection.

“On average, I transfer 800-900cc of fat to each buttock, equivalent to about three and a half cups,” Dr. Newall said. “And we use the entry site for the liposuction cannula, so we are not creating any additional incisions.”

In three years of performing liposuction and fat grafting this way, Dr. Newall has had no cases of infection or complication.  He has seen some of his first patients two years after surgery, and their volume retention is incredible, with 75-85% of the fat surviving and remaining in the transfer site. Women are able to gain up to 4 inches in their buttocks with this method of fat transfer.
