Plastic Surgery is Gaining Popularity Among Men; Houston Plastic Surgeon, Germán Newall shares why

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), male patients represented nine percent of the cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2011. That’s up six percent from 2010 and 16 percent from 2000.  These percentages may seem small, but the reality is that men accounted for nearly 1.2 million cosmetic procedures, both minimally-invasive and surgical in 2011. That’s almost 73,000 more procedures on men than in 2010.

While cosmetic procedures for men have been consistently rising for the past decade, the recent trend is toward surgical procedures, rather than minimally-invasive.Most of the 10 fastest growing procedures for men are surgical, including facelifts at No. 1 and liposuction at No. 5.

Houston plastic surgeon, Dr. Germán Newall, recognizes this shift at his practice.

“Ten years ago maybe five percent of my patients were men,” Newall said. “Today, they make up a good 20 percent.”

This rise in male patients could be a reflection of the baby-boomer generation reaching the age when stress and gravity have taken a toll on their skin, meaning more men are ready to rejuvenate their appearance. It could also be a response to the increasingly competitive job marketing that men and women have faced in the last decade.

“The executive world requires not only skill, but good looks,” Dr. Newall said. “Men feel the need to look younger to stay relevant in today’s job market.”

Though cosmetic surgery is becoming more and more socially acceptable for men, many men still prefer body sculpting procedures like liposuction of the abdomen because the results are more subtle and post-surgery bruising can be hidden under clothes.

“Men tend to opt for procedures that require less recovery time,” Newall said. “Body sculpting is most common because they can be back at work in just a few days.”

Dr. Newall and his partners at The Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery (ACPS) cater to male patients with a comfortable, private location and incredibly natural looking results.  ACPS also offers minimally-invasive procedures like BOTOX® Cosmetic, soft tissue fillers and laser hair removal.
