What Is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift (brachioplasty) gives the upper arms a more toned and firm appearance by removing sagging skin and excess fat. Aging, weight loss, and heredity all cause the skin of the upper arms to lose elasticity, creating unsightly and uncomfortable hanging skin. Though exercise can help tone the muscles, it cannot reverse skin laxity or reduce excess skin. The only way to accomplish this is surgically with a brachioplasty.

Are You a Good Candidate for an Arm Lift?

Brachioplasty typically benefits people concerned about excess, sagging skin in the upper arms due to aging or significant weight loss. To safely undergo the procedure, ideal candidates should:

  • Be a nonsmoker in good overall health
  • Have maintained a stable weight for at least a year with no future weight loss expected
  • Be able to set aside the required downtime for recovery
  • Have realistic expectations about what the procedure can and can’t accomplish

It is essential to your safety to openly discuss your medical history and any medications you are taking with Dr. Newall prior to your surgery. During your personalized consultation, he’ll thoroughly answer your questions and assess your candidacy for an arm lift.

For individuals with good skin elasticity whose concerns are primarily excess upper arm fat, Dr. Newall achieves excellent arm contouring results with liposuction.

What Can an Arm Lift Do for You?

An arm lift corrects “bat wings” and contributes to a sculpted, balanced upper body. Dr. Newall’s brachioplasty patients enjoy these benefits after surgery:

More balanced body proportions

Improved clothing fit

Long-lasting results

Reduced scarring

What To Expect: Your Arm Lift Procedure

Dr. Newall makes small incisions from the underarm to the mid to upper arm or from the underarm to the elbow, depending on the degree of skin looseness. While the procedure results in some scarring, Dr. Newall recommends various effective scar removal products and treatments to reduce the appearance of visible scars.

In addition to concerns over excess arm skin, people who are uncomfortable with loose, hanging skin on the thighs, buttocks, and lower body may benefit from a post-weight loss surgery (body lift) performed by Dr. Newall.

Your Arm Lift Recovery

Most arm lift patients return to work one week after the procedure. Your recovery time depends on your healing rate and other unique factors. In general, arm lift patients encounter the following recovery milestones:

  • Using compression garments to minimize swelling (up to 4 weeks)
  • Limiting arm movement, including raising the arms (about 2 weeks)
  • Refraining from strenuous exercise for several weeks

Dr. Newall will discuss your recovery time and share detailed postoperative instructions. It’s essential to follow his recommendations closely to ensure the best outcome.
