Q & A with Dr. Newall : Get to Know the Doctor

Tell us about your practice.

Dr. Newall: The Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery (ACPS) was established in 1996 by myself, Dr. Henry Mentz, and Dr. Christopher Patronella. Our practice has grown from three doctors to six in a matter of years. In fact, ACPS has become one of the largest and respected private cosmetic plastic surgery practices in Texas and the United States. We have three locations in Houston which include one in Memorial, Katy, and the Galleria/River Oaks area.

What is cosmetic surgery?

Cosmetic surgery is focused on enhancing one’s appearance. The key goals of cosmetic surgery are improving aesthetic appeal, symmetry, and proportion. Cosmetic surgery can be performed on all areas of the head, neck, and body. The scope of cosmetic surgery procedures includes breast enhancement (augmentation, lift, and reduction), facial rejuvenation, and body contouring.

What are some tips for choosing a good plastic surgeon?

I’m glad you asked that because it’s a very common question. First of all, you want to choose a doctor who’s certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery. If you use a board-certified plastic surgeon, you know he or she has completed 3-5 years of training in general surgery and a minimum of 2-3 years of training in plastic surgery. Second, seek a surgeon who does at least 100 procedures per year. For instance, if you’re interested in a tummy tuck procedure, you want to make sure the doctor performs at least 100 tummy tuck surgeries per year. Lastly, you must thoroughly conduct research on the doctor’s website and look at each page including the before and after photo gallery.

We know a large part of your practice focuses on body contouring which includes liposuction, tummy tucks, and the popular Brazilian Butt Lift. Have you noticed any recent surges in particular surgeries?

Definitely! According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the top five surgical procedures of this year were respectively liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), and nose surgery (rhinoplasty).  On the other hand, buttock augmentation (Brazilian Butt Lift) and labiaplasty took the top spots for the most significant increases in the number of procedures performed over the course of a one-year period.

Although there are a variety of methods for doing abdominoplasty, do you prefer a particular tummy tuck surgical technique?

Yes. I almost always do the combination tummy tuck and liposuction procedure. During the 2-5 hour procedure, I make a horizontal incision beneath the bikini line. The loose skin is trimmed away, and the loose underlying tissues and muscles are tightened by bringing them together with sutures. A second incision may also be made around the navel to correct loose skin in the upper abdomen. It’s also possible to improve the appearance of stretch marks if the loose skin with the stretch marks is removed from the lower abdomen. The combination tummy tuck and liposuction procedure helps achieve a toned and tightened appearance. Most of my patients find that they are able to return to work and driving within 2 weeks and exercise in 6 weeks.

You also have a reputation as a Brazilian Butt Lift specialist. Please tell us more about that procedure.

With the rise of curvy celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Sofia Vergara, there has been a growing demand for the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure. I’ve seen a dramatic increase in the number of patients requesting a Brazilian Butt Lift in conjunction with liposuction. In order to improve the results of the BBL surgery, I and my colleagues at ACPS developed a new technique which allows one to safely increase the amount of fat injected into the buttocks in a fraction of the time compared to the more traditional method of injecting fat into the buttocks via a syringe.
