The Next Big Thing in Plastic Surgery

Americans like big butts, and the numbers do not lie. Last year, cosmetic surgeons across the country performed nearly 10,000 buttock augmentations, up from 8,500 done in 2012, according to a new report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Even though buttock augmentation didn’t make the top five surgical procedures of last year, it took the top spot for the most significant increase in the number of procedures performed over a year with a 58% increase compared to 2012.

A recent trend inspired by curvaceous celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez has hit the spotlight: the Brazilian butt lift. The popular term buttock lift is somewhat misleading, as the skin and tissue are not actually lifted. The procedure is called fat grafting where the patient’s own fat is removed from unwanted areas and injected into the buttock to shape the rear.

Houston Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Germán Newall, has performed a myriad number of Brazilian butt lifts for patients from all across the world.

“The overall trend today is a round, curvy buttock that accentuates the waist and hips. Size is still a matter of personal opinion, but generally people desire a lifted look,” says Dr. Newall.

By moving the fat instead of lifting the skin, the procedure requires only a few small entry sites rather than a large incision. The patient’s fat can also be used to add volume to the hips if the patient desires a fuller figure.

On the other hand, buttock enhancement can also be done using a solid silicone implant, but Dr. Newall does not utilize buttock implants due to the high rate of infection.

“Over 25% of buttock implant patients develop complications,” says his patient coordinator, Patricia Escobar.

The Brazilian butt lift procedure generally has an easy recovery which can last anywhere from one to two weeks.

Patients may experience bruising and tenderness in the areas where liposuction was performed. Dr. Newall operates in his private surgery center in Houston, where patients can stay overnight under the close care of our highly trained nursing staff.
