What is Gynecomastia?

An estimated 40 to 60 percent of men are affected by gynecomastia, the condition of having excess breast tissue or enlarged breasts in males. Heredity, hormones, medication, or drug use are all potential causes for this condition which can negatively impact a male’s self- image.

Am I a Good Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

Many patients have come to Dr. Newall because they no longer feel comfortable taking off their shirt in public at the beach and they avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing. This issue also makes it more difficult and painful for men to work out or go jogging. For this reason, Dr. Newall finds this surgery particularly rewarding to perform because of the positive difference in self-confidence he so often sees in male patients.

How is Gynecomastia Surgery performed?

Several techniques are utilized in a gynecomastia procedure depending on the underlying causes of the condition. Male breast reduction can be treated with liposuction and may be all that is required to reduce excess fatty tissue. If excess glandular material is also present, Dr. Newall may use the “short scar removal” technique to make a small incision through which he can remove the hardened glandular tissue. This will leave a small scar that is hidden in the areola line (along the edge of the nipple). If excess skin is present, Dr. Newall can remove this as well. His consultation with you will allow him to determine the best treatment plan to fit your needs.

Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery

To minimize swelling and offer support, compression garments are often worn for the first three weeks. Many men are able to return to normal activities such as work or school within several days of this procedure, but exercise is off limits for at least three weeks. These are average estimates as all patients heal differently.

Where will the procedure be performed?

Gynecomastia surgery or male breast reduction is performed at our award-winning ACPS, The Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery (ACPS), which is the largest private plastic surgery center in Texas. The ACPS exceeds accepted standards for private surgical facilities and is licensed by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The ACPS offers four surgical suites, pre-operative consultation suites, and seven comfortable post-operative recovery suites, all staffed with medical professionals handpicked by our surgeons.
