Fact or Myth: Cosmetic Injectables

Television fuels misconceptions about plastic surgery and cosmetic injectables. From the FX sitcom Nip/Tuck to the not-so-realistic reality show Extreme Makeover, it is hard to know what to believe.

At ACPS, we want our patients to be confident that their safety is our first priority. So, with the help of our cosmetic injectables specialists, Renee Arriaga, FNP and Sherrie Hill, RNC we hope to dispel some common myths about cosmetic injectables.

Fact or Myth: Injectables are chemical based and highly toxic.
Myth: Most people think filler injections are dangerous or unhealthy because it means putting something foreign in their body, but that is not true. Fillers are purified proteins from biologics just like a vaccine, as opposed to a conventional drug that is formed from a chemical compound. So, it’s even more natural than taking over-the-counter pain medicine.

Fact or Myth: The use of cosmetic injectables is not a replacement for a facelift.
Fact: Injectables can prevent lines and treat existing wrinkles to an extent, but some patients can only get the dramatic results they are looking for with facelift surgery. It’s best to consult with a physician to make sure you have realistic expectations for your treatment, whether it is surgical or non-invasive.

Fact or Myth: Injectables are for people that already have wrinkles.
Myth: Fillers are great for both preventing lines and treating existing ones.  By relaxing the muscles, patients are still able to make facial expressions without creating creases. In other words, the fewer times your forehead makes that crease, the less likely it is to stay and become a wrinkle.

Fact or Myth: It’s safe to buy injectables online and administer them at home.
Myth: “This is absolutely false,” says Renee. “No matter what the website or seller says, injectables must be obtained by a local representative of the product and administered by a certified professional at a reputable cosmetic clinic.” This may seem like a no brainer, but many women fall victim to online sellers falsely advertising their products as BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport®, with harmful side effects. No bargain price is worth the risk.

Fact or Myth: The results seen from injectables are temporary.
Fact: Injectables can help prevent and treat wrinkles for a period of time, but the results are temporary and will gradually diminish. This means it will require repeated treatments to maintain your desired look, but it also means it is not permanent like surgery if you are hesitant to commit.

Fact or Myth: People under 30 shouldn’t get BOTOX.
Myth: “Most people think 25 is too young to be getting BOTOX,” says Renee, “but it’s not just age related. Your genetics and your lifestyle also affect when you start to show lines and wrinkles.” It’s about your skin and appearance. If you have lines that you don’t want, cosmetic injectables can help you at any age.

Did you learn something new? Cosmetic injectables are a very safe and effective way to prevent or reverse signs of aging.  The benefits of these products are often clouded by the bad rap they get in the news or on TV, but federal regulation and reputable clinics like The Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery (ACPS) ensure that patient safety is not compromised.
